Raqs Sharqi (literally Eastern Dance) is the classical and popular folk dance of Egypt rooted in pre Islamic times and its traditions have been passed on through the centuries. It is taught within the family as a social grace and ornaments many celebrations. It has survived in its folk form but during certain periods in history of Egypt it has been refined and exalted particularly during the 10th and 11th centuries in the Islamic court and in the 18th century courts of the Ottoman rulers of Egypt. It has a strong rhythmmical pattern supported by �aghani� or �songs to which they are closely linked.
