Description
Raqs Sharqi (literally Eastern Dance) is the classical and popular folk dance of Egypt rooted in pre Islamic times and its traditions have been passed on through the centuries. It is taught within the family as a social grace and ornaments many celebrations. It has survived in its folk form but during certain periods in history of Egypt it has been refined and exalted particularly during the 10th and 11th centuries in the Islamic court and in the 18th century courts of the Ottoman rulers of Egypt. It has a strong rhythmmical pattern supported by aghani or songs to which they are closely linked. Baladi is one of the various forms of Raqs Sharqi and holds a special position and literally means of the country , Baladi music and dance developed together when country people moved to the cities in early 20th century what begun as a simple folk dance became more refined and complex as songs took on new colour shapes and sophistication. Baladi remains a living tradition responsive to local change and contemporary influences . Baladi demands emotional attunement , dynamic, subtle and sensitive and skill from the dancer and musicians who are masters of their art
