Description
Malipenga is a joyful dance and is a form of dance drama and is found in central and northern regions of Malawi. It creates mimes and movements to drumming.
Malipenga started in Nkhata Bay District and spread all over the Northern Region of Malawi. In the Central Region, Mganda, which is a varient of Malipenga is performed in Kasungu, Nkhota kota, Salima, Ntchisi, Dowa and Lilongwe Districts.
A Malipenga group is known as a'Boma'. Each 'Boma' has its own administrative structure. The success of the Boma is the pride of the whole village. The dance is performed for the entertainment on various occasions.

This incredibly exciting drawing seems to portray a dance that honors the birds. It brings to mind the Kachinas of the Hopi (Native American tribe), many of which pay tribute to these graceful and expressive creatures. The Hopis say, "We honor the birds, because they have the same religion." I love the designs and movement in this joyful drawing!
